Over the weekend, the Windspeaker Radio Network continued to push the boundaries within sports broadcasting with another Indigenous language broadcast of the CFL. This time not only in the Cree language with Wayne Jackson (Goodfish Lake First Nation) but the Blackfoot language with Butch Wolfleg (Siksika).
As a non language speaker, it was incredibly humbling and rewarding to be in the middle of two phenomenal language speakers. Not only listening to Butch and Wayne at work broadcasting the CFL game fluently in two different languages but also learning what some of the terms like “Football, Stadium and Touchdown” mean in Cree and Blackfoot.
Take a quick listen to the first touchdown of the game broadcasted in Cree.
In what was a back and forth game, the Edmonton Elks edged out the Stampeders with a last second field goal broadcasted in the Blackfoot language.
