The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will host the 2022 Arctic Winter Games
The announcement was made Wednesday morning in Fort McMurray.
"Nearly 2000 athletes, coaches and cultural delegates from around the circumpolar world will gather in March of 2022 to share the energy of this vibrant northern community," said John Flynn, Arctic Winter Games International Committee president, in the statement.
The sporting event features athletes from Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Russia, and multiple Scandinavian countries, with sporting events like hockey, cross country skiing, speed skating and Dene Games
Wood Buffalo beat out Grand Prairie in the bid process.
The Yukon Territory will host the games in Whitehorse in 2020.
On February 1, Windspeaker Radio will broadcast the WHL game between the Red Deer Rebels and Official Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club with the purpose of "promoting and preserving the endangered language to a larger audience"
