Armond Duck Chief is a singer-songwriter from Siksika Nation and has been performing across Alberta and Canada for over 10 years.
Duck Chief was nominated for a Juno award in 2016 for Aboriginal Album of the Year, along with that nomination he won Best Country Album and Best Songwriter at the 2015 Indigenous Music Awards.
For Duck Chief, as with most artists, 2020 was a quiet year but that did give him the chance to shift his focus, “2020 gave me the opportunity to work on new music I had kind of shelved it for a bit and was focused on different things like playing live shows. So when 2020 slowed down it gave me a chance to get those creative juices flowing.”
As for 2021, his hope is that we all stay safe and wait to see what the unknown will bring. When it comes to live shows, he is looking forward to continuing to bring new music out this year, “I think putting music out at this time is crucial, people need that outlet that can help get them through these tough times.”
With his new single ‘Thinkin’ Bout You’ being released now and a new album set to release in April, Duck Chief is ready to take on 2021 live or virtually to share his songs.
Over the course of his career, there have been many performances with one being a chance to perform in Las Vegas in 2011 at the Indian National Finals Rodeo (INFR), after that performance Duck Chief put out his first album, and has since put out a second and will release his third this year.
There is one performance that does stick out in his mind as one of the best, a highlight for Duck Chief was getting to perform live with an iconic Canadian brand in 2019, “During Indigenous Day Live I got to perform with Blue Rodeo, they played one of my songs with me and then I got to do a couple of verses with Blue Rodeo, Jim Cuddy and the band that was pretty awesome.”
‘Thinkin’ Bout You’ is the latest single to be released from Duck Chief. Just coming out of a songwriting session with a friend Nathan Cunningham which was something new for him to experience sparked his creativity, “This song just started popping into my head, it was on a Sunday afternoon I was just sitting in my living room and it fell into place and by Wednesday we were in the studio getting ready to cut the song.”
Duck Chief headed into the studio to produce the song with John Thiel of Horizon Music, along with other great musicians from the area to collaborate to get the song put together.
“We bring our ideas into the studio and then we call in the heavy hitters whoever we’re going to put on the album, that is my favourite part I love when the song is coming to life,” for Duck Chief another highlight is coming together with so many talented people who add their piece into his songs.
