“We held out hope for as long as we could, but consulting with other festivals and other people in the music world, as well as the health authorities and people in government, we couldn’t do it in a safe manner and it’s so important for us to keep our folk festival community safe."

The August long weekend in Canmore will be a little quieter this year after organizers announced cancellation of the communities Folk Music Festival.

Organizers made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Established in 1978, the festival attracts approximately 21,000 music fans to the mountain town for three days of music on the Stan Rogers Stage in Centennial Park.

Several major events and festivals in Alberta this summer have announced cancellation or postponement due to the ongoing pandemic.

The fate of the Calgary Folk Music Festival, which is scheduled for July 23 to 26 at Prince’s Island Park, has not been announced.
